Beauty really is more than skin deep.

You’re likely reading this page because you want great looking skin. But to set the scene, let’s quickly do the science bit first.

Your skin is the largest organ in your body. It is made up of three main layers: the epidermis is on the outside ... then comes the middle dermis layer ... and on the inside is the the subcutis or basal layer.

Actually, scientists and dermatologists have defined a few more sub-sections of skin (see Reference R1 below) … but for the sake of simplicity, let’s stick to those three main layers.

On the outside, epidermal skin is working to protect you 24/7. It has cells - called Langerhans cells - which are an early warning system for viruses and bacteria. The epidermis is constantly being replaced with new cells. In fact, every day your skin loses about 30,000 to 40,000 cells. That’s getting on for 13 million skin cells that need to be replaced every year!

On the inside, those replacement cells start life in the basal layer of skin. It takes around 5 weeks for those young cells to mature and make their way to the outer epidermis. It’s a constant, 24/7 process. The basal cell layer is also known as the stratum germinativum because it is constantly germinating new cells. (See Ref R1)

And along the way from the bottom layer to the top layer of your skin, those young cells pass through the middle dermal layer. Apart from being the nursery area where young skin cells develop, the dermal layer houses the nerves that give you a sense of touch, temperature and pain. The dermal layer also helps to regulate your body temperature by controlling how much blood it allows to flow. (see Ref A2)

Finally, you might be surprised to learn that each square inch of your skin has about 650 sweat glands, 20 blood vessels, 60,000 melanocytes (which make melatonin), and around 1,000 nerve endings. (See Ref A1)

So, yes … there’s a lot more to skin than meets the eye.

Next up: how does skin age, and what can you do about it?

What Causes Skin to Age Faster?

Of course, there’s a natural process of skin aging. As we get older our skin becomes thinner, is slower to repair itself from damage, and the collagen and elastin fibers which give skin its youthful look and elasticity start to break down. Like it or not, that’s how mother nature intended it.

But big factors which accelerate skin aging are ultraviolet radiation from the outside … and oxidative stress from the inside. Here’s the skinny:

  • UV radiation on the outside. We’ve all heard about the dangers of excessive UV radiation and the wisdom of using UV protection. We’ve added some suggestions for UV protection products (sunscreen, hat and glasses) at the end of this post.

  • Oxidative stress on the inside. This is when your body has more ‘free radicals’ than your antioxidants can clear up. These free radicals are caused by things like sugar, processed food, cigarette smoke and pollution. Basically, free radicals are 'atoms gone crazy' that can damage your DNA and cells.

An article '11 ways to reduce premature skin aging', by the American Academy of Dermatology Association (see Ref A3 below) lists helpful suggestions for not accelerating skin aging. These include avoiding getting a tan, avoiding cigarette smoke (and other sources of free radicals), eating a well balanced diet, taking exercise and using skin moisturizers.

Just to give you a sense of scale of the free radical problem, check out this example. Each puff of cigarette smoke contains about a quadrillion free radicals (that’s a million billion!). So you can see that it’s easy for your body to get overwhelmed by free radicals. (See Ref R6)

Soap is only half the skin care story.

12 Natural Molecules To Help Protect Skin.

Good news. Two of the big ways to help skin - that’s #1 minimizing oxidative stress and #2 nourishing your skin - can be achieved with natural fruits.

If you prefer natural products, there’s no need for chemicals or other artificial ingredients:

#1. Basal Skin Protection with Fruit Polyphenols.

Inner health. Create a better environment for new skin to flourish.

Fruits and vegetables contain antioxidant molecules which are broadly referred to as polyphenols or flavonoids. These molecules help to clear free radicals from the body … but many of them also have more specific benefits.

For example, the best known polyphenol is resveratrol. Resveratrol has longevity benefits and was discovered when scientists were asking the question: “how come the French eat lots of bread and fatty foods … but they’re healthier and slimmer than Americans?” The answer to the so-called ‘French Paradox’ turned out to be a molecule found in grapes which scientists called resveratrol. Of course the French drink a lot of red wine … which is why they get to be healthier.

By the way, the American muscadine grape is America’s strongest source of grape resveratrol and other polyphenols. In fact muscadine wines can contain up to 100x more resveratrol than wines made with French grapes like Pinot Noir.

But you don’t need to drink gallons of wine. Our muscadine supplement contains the important polyphenols in an alcohol-free, sugar-free, preservative-free, vegetarian capsule:

Here’s a list of the polyphenols found in muscadine grapes:

  • Resveratrol

  • Quercetin

  • Ellagic acid

  • Myricetin

  • Kaempferol

  • Gallic acid

Between them, these molecules can help keep your body healthy, reduce premature aging from the inside, reduce the risk of serious diseases, and increase the energy of cellular mitochondria so you feel healthier.

And the healthier your body is, the better it can create healthy new skin cells.

“A growing body of research indicates that polyphenol consumption may play a vital role in health through the regulation of metabolism, weight, chronic disease, and cell proliferation.” (See Ref R4 below)

#2. Epidermis Skin Protection with Fruit Moisturizers.

Outer glow.  Help protect your skin from the environmental factors that lead to wrinkles and blemishes.

At Muscadinex, we’ve been making 100% natural muscadine capsules for years. We believe in products without artificial ingredients. Now, after two year’s research, we’ve launched a handmade soap that can help to protect and rejuvenate your skin.

🍇MUSCADINE JUICE FOR CELLULAR REJUVENATION. Instead of using water as the base for our soap we use pure muscadine juice. The natural fructose fruit sugars help to draw moisture into your cells and also encourage the growth of new cells. Thanks to the natural fructose in our muscadine juice you also get a luxuriant foam for a deep-cleansing wash. It’s a luxuriant way to fight wrinkles.

🍇TRIPLE MOISTURIZING SKINCARE. Our Muscadinex soap combines three oils which deliver a wide spectrum of rejuvenating skincare benefits. Natural shea butter contains linoleic oil for skin hydration. Virgin olive oil contains squalene for skin elasticity. And organic coconut oil adds deep, antibacterial cleansing for radiant, healthy skin. A great face moisturizer.

🍇MUSCADINE POLYPHENOLS FOR ANTI-AGING. Known as American’s healthiest grape, the muscadine is America's richest source of grape resveratrol and other polyphenols. These fruit polyphenols can protect cells from the effects of free radicals, pollution and UV light. Our muscadine juice base contains pressed muscadine skins, which is where those healthy polyphenols are found. It’s the perfect beauty skincare gift.

🍇NO JUNK, ANIMAL FRIENDLY. No harsh chemicals, parabens or detergents. No propylene glycol or SLS sodium lauryl sulphate. Naturally antibacterial without triclosan. Plus our canola oil is naturally pressed and rich in Omega 3 for healthy skin. And our ‘richer lather’ palm oil is sustainable, to help local farmers and protect animal habitats. It’s the environmentally sensitive soap you’ve been looking for.

🍇HANDMADE IN THE USA, NATURALLY. Our unique antiaging soap is handmade in North Carolina. Each bar is made the old-fashioned way using the traditional cold cure process. This means the bars are left to mature for four weeks so the active ingredients can have maximum health and beauty benefits. Every bar is individually shrink-wrapped to ensure it reaches you in perfect condition. It’s handmade soap for women and men.

“Phytonutrients present in the diet possess a myriad of health-promoting effects by protecting skin from damaging free radicals as well as by other mechanisms. Although many chemoprotective phytonutrients have been shown to be efficacious individually, a combination of multiple agents could have synergistic response in curtailing or preventing cutaneous damages.” (See ref R5 below)
