Can Muscadines and Green Tea Help Covid Corona Virus Protection? Research Links.

Recent research led by Professor De-Yu Xie, professor of plant and microbial biology at North Carolina State University, indicates that natural proanthocyanidin molecules can bind to Covid proteins and help prevent replication of the virus.

Professor Xie found that the most potent proanthocyanidins are found in dark chocolate, green tea and muscadine grapes.

The Muscadinex MX1 supplement (details at the end of this post) includes 325mg of muscadine skin powder (polyphenols and proanthocyanidins, including resveratrol, ellagic acid and quercetin) plus 325mg of muscadine seed (OPC oligomeric proanthocyanidins) . The powders are sourced from Muscadine Naturals of North Carolina, who hold a patent for processing muscadine grapes.

You can fight pandemic with this diet, says NCSU professor based on new study.

Synopsis. "Vaccines are on the way, but right now you can use diet to prevent COVID-19, says a professor at N.C. State - based on findings in a newly published study. Eat grapes, drink green tea – and enjoy chocolate.

In fact, De-Yu Xie, professor of plant and microbial biology at NCSU, believes so much in what he has found that he’s recommending the diet right now. The study, published in the journal Frontiers in Plant Science, shows “active compounds” in certain foods fight the virus at the cellular level."

Chemical Compounds in Foods Can Inhibit a Key SARS-CoV-2 Enzyme.

Synopsis. "Chemical compounds in foods or beverages like green tea, muscadine grapes and dark chocolate can bind to and block the function of a particular enzyme, or protease, in the SARS-CoV-2 virus, according to a new study by plant biologists at North Carolina State University.

Proteases are important to the health and viability of cells and viruses, says De-Yu Xie, professor of plant and microbial biology at NC State and the corresponding author of the study. If proteases are inhibited, cells cannot perform many important functions – like replication, for example."

Docking Characterization and in vitro Inhibitory Activity of Flavan-3-ols and Dimeric Proanthocyanidins Against the Main Protease Activity of SARS-Cov-2.

Synopsis. "Studies have shown that in addition to aerosol transmission, this virus can be transmitted through gastrointestinal infection (Lamers et al., 2020; Xiao et al., 2020) and can stably stay for 3 h in air and 72 h on plastic and steal surfaces (van Doremalen et al., 2020). In addition to causing lung diseases, this virus has been found to cause other health complications, such as abdominal pain (Lamers et al., 2020) and neurologic abnormality (Helms et al., 2020).

In this study, our goal was to use the Mpro of SARS-Cov-2 for docking simulation to screen flavan-3-ols and PAs (proanthocyanidins), to identify potential active candidates, and to characterize their binding similarity and difference among various structures. Then, based on positive docking results, we used the Mpro of SARS-Cov-2 to perform in vitro inhibitory experiments. Five compounds were identified to have anti-Mpro activity. Crude extracts from green tea, cacao, chocolate, and two muscadine grapes, which are rich in flavan-3-ols and PAs, also showed inhibitory effects on the Mpro activity."
